Ikon 2:

Birmingham's new museum of contemporary art

New details were announced recently about Ikon 2, the proposed new museum of contemporary art for Birmingham. Ikon 2 will form part of the suggested Curzon Square, a new museum quarter situated in the Eastside district of the city. The plans for Curzon Square comprise of a museum of photography, a new building for an existing national collection of art and Ikon 2. The historic Curzon Street Station would also be renovated as part of the proposals.

Adjacent to the intended HS2 rail terminal, Curzon Square will be transformative, in the way that Tate Modern has brought a vast swathe of London back to life. Its venues will be impressive architecture in a village-like critical mass of artistic attraction. A place for exhibitions, free to the public, performance, music and dance, film screenings and a wide variety of outdoor activities.

Planning for the Curzon Square museum quarter is well advanced with a feasibility study supported by Birmingham City Council, Arts Council England and Advantage West Midlands and a new art collection starting to form with £1m for acquisitions being made available by the Art Fund. It is proposed that
the development of Curzon Square be phased, with completion of the scheme by 2020.
