The Education and Interpretation team build meaningful relationships with Ikon’s audience that enable visitors to engage with, discuss and reflect upon contemporary art. The gallery believes that such activity celebrates personal experience, promotes creativity and engenders an enthusiasm for learning.
This approach invites audiences to construct meaning from a variety of sources – exhibited work, curatorial comment, participatory activity, artists own writings and so on. Ikon understands that committing to this approach also requires the provision of resources, support and the ‘tools’ through which meaning can be formed, discussed and presented. These resources currently take the form of talks, tours, off-site projects, targeted workshops and seminars, each designed to build and develop an ongoing relationship with our audience.
Ikon also acknowledges that engaging in such activity creates an expectation amongst its audience that their opinions, views and ideas will inform ongoing activity. The Education and Interpretation team commits to developing innovative ways to enter into dialogue in order to expand its relationships with visitors.
