Ikon Youth Programme (IYP) is a group of young people who share an interest in visual art. Meeting regularly at Ikon Gallery young people aged 15 - 19 years are encouraged to devise creative projects, establish networks with other youth groups and share their thoughts and opinions about a range of topics.

Current projects
Ikon launches Slow Boat, an innovative three-year programme (2011–2013) involving the Ikon Youth Programme (IYP). Organised in collaboration
with British Waterways.
Using a converted canal boat as a catalyst, IYP will produce, present and promote their own work as well as that of other artists. The boat acts as a stage for on-board exhibitions, canal-side performances, screenings, installations, theatrical events, talks and activities in various locations en route. The young people will take Slow Boat on numerous day and weekend trips, plus longer voyages outside Birmingham along the many canal routes that link the city to the rest of the country.
Each year a contemporary artist will work in residency alongside the IYP to redesign the boat; for 2011 Dutch artist Marjolijn Dijkman makes her mark
on the Slow Boat.
Slow Boat is supported by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and Sandwell Council.
