Edition of 75, 300 x 240mm, mounted and unframed.
These three wood engravings
have been produced on the occasion of Ikon’s exhibition Tale-pieces, 8
April-25 May 2009, a selection of vignettes by Thomas Bewick. Now universally
recognised as the father of modern wood engraving, he is justly celebrated for
the two series of illustrations for his General
History of Quadrupeds of 1790 and his History
of British Birds of 1797 (Land Birds) and 1804 (Water Birds).
Of the three
subjects, the Bulldog was engraved for the 1790 edition of the Quadrupeds; the Lesser Redpole, and the
tail-piece of the man relieving himself beside a fragment of ruined wall were
made for the first 1797 volume of the British
Birds.
The
edition is sold in a hinged mount to fit directly into a standard sized frame
(300 x 240mm). For more information please contact Ikon bookshop.
