Using a wide range of media including text, film and drawing, Gussin's work is concerned with our notions of time, space and scale. This catalogue, launched to accompany the artist’s exhibition at Ikon from April – June 2002, documents the show and also acts as a survey of the artist's work since 1990.
A series of full colour images of the pieces shown in the exhibition are included in the publication involving a collection of works made up of both new commissions and a selection of earlier pieces in a variety of media. Through his use of science fiction titles, film scenes or pieces of dialogue, Gussin fuses together ideas about landscape, translation and movement. Concerned essentially with ideas exploring human comprehension, the artist complicates our grasp of reality through suggestions of the unknown. As a result, the viewer often plays a vital role when encountering the work as, to complete the picture, we project our own experiences and information on to what we see and hear.
An in-depth essay, Distance and Proximity, by artist and curator Jeremy Millar, runs throughout the publication, exploring some of the themes and concepts that underpin Gussin’s work, as well as analysing individual pieces that featured in the show. Full-page colour images of these pieces are interspersed within the text, as well as a full list of works.
