This catalogue coincided with Ian Davenport’s exhibition at Ikon in September 2004. It was the first retrospective in his career, included work from 1988 to the present, and offered an unprecedented opportunity to see the development of the artist’s style and technique, from early paintings of paint pots to more recent Circle Paintings and Tip Paintings.
Davenport works on a variety of surfaces, most recently on MDF and aluminium, onto which he pours large amounts of household paint using everyday devices such as watering cans and plastic syringes. The colours reflect parts of our everyday experience, taking inspiration from everything from the urban landscape to cartoons, yet their processes are strangely poetic and the production deceptively simple.
This publication features a foreword by Ikon Director Jonathan Watkins, an essay by Tony Godfrey, colour images of the installation at Ikon, a list of works and a biography.
