This
publication coincides with Steven Shearer’s first major solo exhibition in Europe, his most comprehensive to date, comprising recent
and new work. With essays from the curators of both galleries and art critic
Nancy Tousley, this catalogue presents the first critical in-depth examination
of his practice. Encompassing painting, drawing, photo-collage, text and
sculptural pieces, Shearer’s work specifically draws on issues of teenage
identity and the culture of Heavy Metal.
This is subject matter, that springs
from the suburbs of large cities - where
groups such as Rush, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath secured their fan-base -
Ikon and Power Plant, located in Birmingham and Toronto respectively, exist in
cultural contexts which provide a perfect backdrop for a consideration of
artist’s practice overall.
