German artist Wolfgang Weilder undertook house-birmingham, an offsite project in the city's Centenary Square in 2004, showing his film at Ikon one year later. Over a period of 12 days, Weileder presented an extraordinary, site-specific sculpture that revealed the process, labour and skills involved throughout the initial stages of building as a visible experience. The construction became an event, a unique spectacle and spatial experience of a process in flux rather than the presentation of a finished structure. Thus raising questions about the permanence of architectural structures, their relationship to their surroundings, and the nature of housing.
This publication details similar projects in Newcastle and Madrid alongside an interview with Ikon Curator Nigel Prince and essays by Lisa Le Feuvre and Sven-Olov Wallenstein.
