Anti-dog was the first project in the UK by Spanish artist Alicia Framis; which was the result of collaboration with people from a local housing estate. A six month residency focused on the vulnerability of women in urban environments and personal accounts of abuse, leading to the design and creation of five dresses using Twaron, a specialist protective fabric.
Emblazoned on the garments were various insults and obscenities that the women had had directed at them, phrases such as ‘Fuck you’ and ‘Go back to where you belong’. The project culminated in a fashion parade – with participants wearing the ‘anti-dog’ dresses, attended by assistants – in Victoria Square against the backdrop of Birmingham’s Council House.
