Coinciding with his exhibition at Ikon Gallery, New York- based artist Paul Ramirez Jonas presented Another Day, a video piece on a railway platform monitor, a screen on which people normally see the departure times of trains. Slowly scrolling, in chronological order, were the times of sunrises that would occur during the next few hours in various parts of the world. The names of towns and cities, increasingly far-flung as the day progressed, would pause momentarily and then disappear as direct sunlight shone on them. Commuters in the late afternoon, on Platform 2 of Birmingham’s Snow Hill Station, thus were encouraged to contemplate the dawns coming and going somewhere in the pacific.
