For her first major UK exhibition, German artist Katharina Grosse made large-scale paintings sprayed directly onto Ikon's second floor gallery walls. The intensity of colours, the freedom and breadth with which they are applied, at once made reference to post-war abstract expressionism and colour-field painting and was absolutely unironic.
A vast off-site mural was also exhibited at Birmingham Central Library in December 2002.
