Andrea Zittel

A-Z Compartment Units

15 November 2001 – 15 January 2002

It was the first large-scale commission in the UK for New York artist Andrea Zittel. Zittel took temporary possession over the five months at different locations in Birmingham. The American artist used one space and divided the space into a series of ‘cellular compartment units’. These quasi-architectural modules could be stacked next to, and on top of each other in different configurations, and the artist customised them to meet her day-to day needs. After her departure, the whole installation, bearing traces of recent occupancy, was open to the public.
