Beatriz Milhazes

04 April – 13 May 2001

This was the first exhibition in the UK by Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes. It consisted of paintings in which layers of concentric patterns, circles in circles, spirals and arabesques, floral emblems and rosettes, set up a dialogue between Brazilian motifs and references to western Modernist painting. Extraordinarily smooth surfaces are achieved by the artist's use of plastic sheeting onto which paint is applied and then peeled off onto canvases. Her work suggests seamlessness and careful premeditation and yet, at the same time, it is wonderfully prone to chance effects.
