Hiccup was a five day performance in 2003 which involved the artist sitting on the same step of Birmingham’s Central Library, at the same time each day, wearing the same clothes, repeating the same routine of simple everyday actions. These included smoking a cigarette, sipping a coffee, looking to the left, stretching her leg and adjusting her hat, in a careful choreography directed by a pre-recorded audio track on headphones. For four days, Mark entered into the normal daily lives of the people around her, who in turn became the unwitting ‘extras’ in the background.
The documentation of this project was shown at Ikon in 2006.
