Aria Mobile

28 March – 20 May 2007

Concerned with the process as much as the end result, Losi’s work involves the accumulation of small gestures towards the manifestation of an extraordinary holistic proposition.

Aria Mobile is a small ball that Losi created over five years by meticulously embroidering the profiles of the continents onto the object, with longer stitches indicating the passage of high-altitude winds around the globe.

This work is based on the practice of ‘Mari’, a Japanese term for the embroidered balls of thread that are presented as good luck gifts. Historically they were made from the remnants of old kimonos but instead Losi chose to use different coloured threads from around the world, each progressive layer of the ball representing a particular time she spent in a certain place.
